Our Mission

Outward Spiral Theatre Company is dedicated to producing theatre from a Queer point-of-view. We strive to entertain, educate and act as a catalyst for social change through inclusive, multi-cultural, provocative artistic expression.

Board of Directors

Carey Winkler, Interim President

Carey comes to Outward Spiral with a background in social services. She received her Master's in Social Work and is currently a licensed graduate social worker working as a program director serving single women and children. Carey is committed to social change that transcends social constructivism and strives for grow through storytelling, community building and celebration as vehicles of social healing. Carey bring passion, dedication, management and administration expertise and commitment to help Outward Spiral diversify its relationships and influence in the community.

Henry Allen, Interim Vice President

Henry Allen was steeped in world culture from an early age.
His experiences living in Europe and Latin America have had a profound impact on his life and work as an artist, educator and parent. Surviving cancer and overcoming obesity have taught many lessons in courage, empowerment and integrity. Henry's career as a performer, director, writer and teacher has spanned more than 20 years. Henry is also a member of Rainbow Families, a vocalist, model and creative director/consultant. His company, All of the Above, is a creative worktank and performance collaborative that encourages young people and adults to debut themselves as artists, teaching that it is possible at all levels of experience and ability to tap into one's innate creative impulses and apply them to life and work.

Carrie J. Johnson, Interim Secretary and Treasurer

Carrie J. Johnson is a Minneapolis intellectual property attorney. Born and raised in Minnesota, Johnson has been involved in the arts her entire life. Johnson spent her childhood and adolescence participating in a variety of roles in community theater and was an active instrumental and vocal musician while a student at St. Olaf College. Johnson holds a B.A. in Art History from St. Olaf and a law degree from Creighton University. She serves as Vice President and Secretary with Outward Spiral and also assists the company as its legal advisor.

Anne Hodson

Anne Hodson has had a life long interest in theatre since playing the part of a tree in her second grade production of Hamlet (or something like that). Anne was born in a log cabin that she helped her parents build here in Minnesota. In high school and college she participated in every theatre production available, working on costumes and wardrobe, set design and construction, lighting, sound, and acting. Anne is passionate about working to educate people about the many varied life experiences of our LGBT community and finds that the mission of Outward Spiral is a perfect fit.

Artistic Staff

Jeffry Lusiak, Artistic Director

Jeffry Lusiak currently serves Outward Spiral Theater Company as Artistic Director. His show credits with OSTC include: In The Garden, Mineola Twins, Valets, Falsettos, 5 Women on a Hill in Spain, Ladies and Gentlemen, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told. Lusiak has also worked on numerous shows with Illusion Theater and performed as a company member of Dykes Do Drag, where he takes the stage as Puss Puss. Lusiak is currently working for Project SUCCESS as a Facilitator/Artist in Residence.

Jason Bucklin, Associate Artistic Director

Jason Bucklin's first started with Outward Spiral was as an usher for Hedwig and the Angry Inch. In 2003, he joined the company as an Assistant Director for In the Heart of America and has played an active role in the company since. In 2004, Jason directed The Valets, which appeared as a part of the Minnesota Fringe Festival and Assistant Directed In the Garden the following month. Jason is driven by the belief that art builds community and has been using Outward Spiral as a way to bridge the gaps within the queer community. Originally a small town Iowan, Jason moved to the Twin Cities when he began attending Hamline University where he received his B.A in Theater.

Molly Jalma, Artistic Associate

Molly Jalma has been actively involved with Outward Spiral over the past few years, as Assistant Stage Manager for OSTC's production of "In the Garden" as well as a performer for 2005's HRC campaign dinner event. Molly was a technician for the Bryant Lake Bowl Theatre between 2003-2005, and both Political Science and Theatre at the University of Minnesota. Molly continues to be onstage and backstage throughout the Twin Cities performance scene. With a strong passion for performance art, Molly looks forward to queering theatre with Outward Spiral and Empowered Expressions.

Heather Spear, Artistic Associate

Andrea Jenkins, Artistic Support

Andrea Jenkins is Senior Policy Aide for Elizabeth Glidden, who was elected to represent the 8th Ward in South Minneapolis in November 2005. Andrea joined the 8th Ward Office in January, 2006.

Andrea earned her Masters of Science, Community Economic Development –Southern New Hampshire University, Manchester, New Hampshire, a Certificate, University of St. Thomas, Community Leadership Institute, and Bachelors of Science, Human Services / Interpersonal Communications – Metropolitan State University and is currently pursuing a MFA in Creative Writing at Hamline University.

As a Poet and writer, her work has appeared in several local publications including The Minneapolis Spokesman and Recorder, The City of Minneapolis Website, The Minneapolis Observer and many others. She has performed with The Outward Spiral, Mama Mosiac and many others. Andrea has self-published a chapbook of poems called “tributaries: poems celebrating black history.” She currently is co-curator of the S.A.S.E, Carol Connolly GLBT Reading Series at Intermedia Arts.
